The Beginning of the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel in San Juan

The year was 1919, and Frederick William Vanderbilt had a dream: He wanted to create a luxe resort for socialites, royalty, and Hollywood’s elite. As a member of one of the wealthiest families in America, he obtained premier oceanfront property in the heart of the most exclusive district in San Juan, Puerto Rico: Condado. To ensure his tropical retreat was the finest on the island, he hired the renowned architect firm Warren and Whitmore—the same architects who built Grand Central Station and New York’s Biltmore. Soon after, the Condado Vanderbilt hotel was open for business.

The Inspiration Behind Our Style and Grandeur

Condado hotel in San Juan

Mr. Vanderbilt himself thought up the design of our beautiful Condado hotel in Puerto Rico. He knew he had the best views of the ocean, and he wanted a structure that flowed flawlessly with its gorgeous surroundings, while still being opulent enough to attract the world’s elite. The result was a Spanish Revival style, complete with a dominant white color accented by rich red tiles, French windows, high ceilings, elegant archways, and sweeping staircases. Many of these inspiring design details can still be seen today at the Condado Vanderbilt hotel in San Juan.
