In 1919, Frederick William Vanderbilt, scion of one of America’s wealthiest families and among the most influential men in the country, acquired oceanfront land in the exclusive Condado District of San Juan, Puerto Rico. He selected the prominent architectural firm of Warren and Whitmore -- which designed New York City’s Grand Central Station, as well as the Biltmore, Commodore, and Ambassador Hotels -- to design Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, a tropical retreat in the heart of the lush, exotic Caribbean.
The early Spanish Revival style architecture was suggested by Frederick William Vanderbilt himself. Capitalizing on the property’s breathtaking setting adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, the designers created an imposing Beaux Arts-style structure with white walls, red tiles, French windows, lofty ceilings and other design details typical of the style at the time.
Inside, the original sweeping staircases and graceful archways remain intact to this day.
Historic Vanderbilt
A San Juan five-star hotel from the day its doors opened, Condado Vanderbilt shone for its unique beauty and magnificence, attracting the society hoi polloi originally envisioned by Mr. Vanderbilt. Among the hotel’s distinguished visitors were Charles Lindberg, Carlos Gardel, Errol Flynn, Bob Hope, Arthur Rubinstein, and President Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt.
Condado Vanderbilt Hotel has undergone a number of renovations through its storied history. In 1950, 80 new hotel rooms, a new bar, cocktail lounge and coffee shop were added. But by the 1970s, the hotel’s grandiosity had begun to fade and its imminent demolition was only prevented by an executive order by Governor Luis A. Ferré, who declared it a cultural heritage. Sadly, the celebrated hotel shut its doors during the 90s.
